Chapter Ten “A Warm Welcome”
1. What are the connotations of the word master? What does the fact that the town’s leader is called “Master” rather than: King” or “Mayor” or “Governor” suggest about the way he rules? Why does the Master welcome the expedition?

The connotations of the word “Master” brings to mind someone who is controlling and views his subjects as something he owns. The Master brings welcome to the expedition because everyone was already cheering the return of the king under the mountain

2. What is the history of the relationship between the dwarves and the men? Why are the dwarves happy? Why is Bilbo unhappy?

The history of the relationship between the dwarves and the men is that the men were wealthy and powerful when Dale was still rich and prosperous. Some hoped Thror and Thrain would return so they could be wealthy and happy again. The dwarves are happy and Bilbo is unhappy because the dwarves are being treated very well and are excited that they have returned to reclaim Dale. Bilbo however, remembers that they still have the task of killing Smaug ahead of them.
3. What does the Elvenking think will happen to the dwarves?

The Elvenking suspects the dwarves are just burglars and thinks they will come to a bad end.
4. What is the Master’s reaction when Thorin announces his departure?

The Master was surprised and a little frightened. When Thorin announces his departure.

Chapter Eleven “On the Doorstep”

 

1. What won’t the men of Lake-town stay with the dwarves? Where does the expedition make each of their three camps?

The men of the Lake-town won’t stay with the dwarves because the songs have not come true yet and the dragon is still alive.

The three expeditions were:

1.On the western side of the Great Southern Spur which ended in a height called Ravenhill.

2. Moved to a long valley, narrower than the great dale in the south where the Gates of the river stood, walled with lower spurs of the mountain.

3. Made on grassy bay near the entrance. Each area keeps the, safe and guarded and hidden.
2. What causes the door to appear? Should the dwarves have predicted this event? Why didn’t they?

The sun shines on the door and part of it cracked and then a rock split from the door and the key hole appears and then Thorin placed his key inside and the door opened. No the dwarves have not predicted this event.
Chapter Twelve “Inside Information”

 

1. Who goes partway down the tunnel with Bilbo?

Balin went partway with Bilbo down the tunnel.
2. What does Bilbo take from the hoard?

Bilbo took a two handed cup from the hoard.
3. Bilbo quotes two of his father’s sayings. What are they? Who is the real leader of the expedition?

Bilbo quotes two quotes from his father: “Third time pays for all.” and “Every worm has its weak spot.” Bilbo is the real leader of the expedition.
4. What about Bilbo puzzles Smaug?

Bilbo puzzles Smaug by his smell.
5. What is the most important thing Bilbo learns from Smaug? What proverb does Bilbo invent?

The most important thing Bilbo learnt was where Smaug’s weak spot is – he has an unprotected spot on his left breast.
6. What is the Arkenstone?

The Arkenstone is a great white gem known as the heart of them mountain. It is very important to the dwarves.

Chapter Thirteen “Not at Home”

 

1. What does Thorin give Bilbo?

Thorin gave Bilbo a small coat of mail made of mithril
2. Which hall leads to the Front Gate?

The great chamber of Thror; the hall of feasting and of council leads to Front Gate.
3. Why do the dwarves leave the underground halls?

The dwarves left the underground halls because to find a safe place to eat and stay.
